You know, they had this big thing, the Eggdog Invitational. Sounds funny, right? Eggdog. Like a dog made of egg. Anyway, it was for them video game players, the ones who play that Smash Bros. Melee. My grandson, he plays that. Always yelling at the TV. So, this Eggdog thing, it was in this place, Vancouver, up in Canada. Lots of folks went there.
They say it was a big deal, a “supermajor” they called it. Don’t know what that means, but it sounds important. Had all the best players, 16 of them. Came from all over. They played for four days, from August 29th to September 1st. Must’ve been tired, all that playing. My back hurts just thinking about it.
Folks wanted to know who won, who was the best. They had lists and brackets and stuff. Confusing to me, all those names and numbers. But people like to know who’s winning, who’s losing. Makes it exciting, I guess.
- They say you could watch it online, the “streams.” My grandson does that. Watches other people play games. I don’t get it. Why not play yourself? But he says these guys are real good. The best.
- They even had “tiebreakers” if folks were tied. Like a race, but with video games. Gotta be quick with those fingers. My fingers are too stiff for that.
- And they talked about “standings” and “schedules.” Sounds like a train station. People coming and going, gotta keep track of who’s where.
They also talked about “stage usage” and “character usage.” Don’t know what that means, but it sounds like they’re keeping track of everything. Like how they count the cows at the market. Gotta know how many you got.
And there were people answering questions about the Eggdog thing. Folks asking all sorts of things, I bet. Like how they got so good at the game. Probably takes a lot of practice. Like knitting a sweater. Gotta keep at it.
They said it was in Richmond, BC. Don’t know where that is, but it’s part of Vancouver, I guess. Big city, probably. Lots of tall buildings and busy streets. Not like here, where everyone knows everyone.
My grandson, he wanted to go. Said it was a big deal. But it’s too far. And too expensive. Gotta save money for important things, like food and bills. Not for watching people play video games.
But he was excited anyway. Told me all about the players and their “characters.” Said one guy plays as “Mango.” Like the fruit? I asked him. He just laughed. Kids these days.
So, that was the Eggdog Invitational. A big thing for them video game players. Don’t understand it myself, but if it makes them happy, then I guess it’s alright. We all need something to enjoy, right? Even if it’s just watching a dog made of egg.
