Alright, let’s talk about this “padrea” thing, whatever that is. Sounds like some fancy word the city folks use, eh? But I reckon I can figure it out. You know, like when you gotta figure out how to get that stubborn mule to plow the field, you just gotta poke around a bit.
So, I heard some fellas talking down at the market, said somethin’ ’bout “Padres.” Now, that I know! It’s them baseball fellas, always runnin’ around in their fancy pants and hittin’ that little ball with a stick. San Diego Padres, that’s it! They’re a Major League Baseball team, big shots they are, always on that TV thing.
- My grandson, little Timmy, he’s all about them Padres. Got their posters all over his room, drives his ma crazy, all that glue on the walls.
- He keeps yellin’ ’bout some players, like… uh… pitchers and… and… I don’t know, all kinds of names I can’t even pronounce.
This “padrea” thing, maybe it’s got somethin’ to do with them players? I heard tell they gotta shuffle them around, like a deck of cards, you know? They call it a roster, fancy word for a list, I guess. And they gotta do it by some deadline, which means they gotta hurry up and do it, like gettin’ the hay in before the rain comes.
Now, somebody told me they use these letters, P-A-D-R-E-A, to play some word game. Like them crossword puzzles in the newspaper? I can barely read them, let alone play them. But apparently, you can jumble these letters up and make all sorts of words. Scrabble, they call it. Sounds like a whole lotta fuss to me.
So, this “padrea,” it’s connected to the San Diego Padres, them baseball fellas. And it’s got somethin’ to do with their players and shuffling them around. And you can even use them letters to play a word game. See? I figured it out. Not so hard after all.
My old man, he used to say, “Life’s like a baseball game, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but you always gotta keep swingin’.” I reckon that’s true, even for them Padres. They got all these fancy players and all that money, but they still gotta go out there and play the game. And sometimes they win, and sometimes they lose. Just like the rest of us.
And that Cy Young thing? Heard tell one of them Padres fellas did real good, finished in the top four. That’s a big deal, they say. Kinda like winnin’ first prize at the county fair for your prize-winning pumpkin, only fancier, I guess.
But at the end of the day, it’s just a game, ain’t it? Just like plantin’ seeds and watchin’ ’em grow, you gotta have patience and you gotta keep workin’ at it. And sometimes, even when you do everything right, the weather comes and washes it all away. But you just gotta pick yourself up and start all over again.
So, this “padrea” thing… it’s just a word, a bunch of letters jumbled together. But it tells a story, a story about baseball, about players, about winnin’ and losin’, and about keepin’ on keepin’ on, even when things get tough. And that, I reckon, is somethin’ we can all understand, city folk and country folk alike.
And them fellas on ESPN, they talk about the Padres all the time. Always yappin’ about stats and scores and whatnot. I tell you, sometimes I just wanna turn the darn thing off and listen to the birds sing.
But Timmy, he loves it. So I guess I’ll put up with it. For him. Besides, sometimes them fellas say somethin’ that even an old woman like me can understand. Like when they said that Padres pitcher did good, real good. That made me smile. Made me proud, even though I don’t know a lick about baseball.
